One of the mistakes or problems is that most physical activity kids are introduced to is team sports. But, as adults, the sports most people do are individual sports -- walking, running, biking, swimming, weight training, and so on.Robert Grumbinehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10783453972811796911noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5337555368793819627.post-3181698417547569142010-08-26T17:25:13.922-04:002010-08-26T17:25:13.922-04:00Telling adults to work out is one thing, but getti...Telling adults to work out is one thing, but getting them past the stage where their initial enthusiasm gives way to ennui is quite another. We don't encourage kids to exercise anywhere as strongly as we did in the past, and if they don't develop an exercise habit at that age, they'll have a difficult time sticking to a workout schedule as adults.Tomhttp://skinnybulkup.comnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5337555368793819627.post-88049432801229514202010-05-07T22:48:34.389-04:002010-05-07T22:48:34.389-04:00Throughout the variety of classes and stations the...Throughout the variety of classes and stations the instructor has designed, there has been one that I always dreaded: the 1 minute mountain climbers followed by 1 minute thrust jumps. The jumps terrified me. Whenever I got to the station I'd do the mountain climbers and then just jump in place, rather than attempt to jump up on the platform. I was afraid. A few weeks ago when the jumps were back in the rotation I decided I was going to at least try to jump up. I tried and I did it! Once. I was happy but still too scared to do it again and went back to my jumps on the floor. The next week I tried again and did it a couple more times but my legs hurt so bad after about 30 seconds of doing them that I finished the station jogging in place. Yesterday I decided I was going to do all of the stations for the entire time, no matter what. I wasn't going to worry about how I looked doing a bear walk across the room with my ass in the air or be afraid of falling or hurting from the jumps. I completed the entire 1 minute portion of the thrust jumps yesterday and went directly to the jump ropes without even blinking! And I didn't even need my husband to rub Ben-gay on me last night!P. He just is sure to build up a really big account before making withdrawals!

ERV: Good to see you here! Moms and dads, and grandmas and granddads, can be great sources of inspiration (or cautionary tales).

But one elaboration ... many folks are concerned about going to the track, or to the weight room, because they'll be too slow, or lifting weights that are too light. Your mom (and yay her!) lifting double what the younger folks do isn't fighting that thought. So I'll offer up my mother's experience. She'd torn her rotator cuff a few years ago and had to go to the gym for rehab work. We're talking now about moving maybe the bar -- completely unweighted.

Still, the folks there, much younger, much fitter, were exceedingly supportive.

The thing is, gym or track or pool or ..., the folks doing some sort of exercise like it. And what they like, they like to see other people do and enjoy. So you can show up (certainly many gyms/tracks/..., much of the time) and there'll be plenty of people ready to help you out -- learning the sport they like.

There are exceptions, as with anything (for running, I call them the 'half fast'). But even the same location at a different time of day can be a very different sort of people. As with running clubs, shop around time of day.

Oh, while mentioning osteoporosis -- folks should also be sure to get their calcium and vitamin D. My body turns out to be very lazy about producing D, so I have to be more attentive about my diet. Bones are an issue for us guys too.Robert Grumbinehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10783453972811796911noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5337555368793819627.post-30832700165655886152010-01-11T21:08:59.304-05:002010-01-11T21:08:59.304-05:00Exactly.
