So, yes, I'd found Oldenburg on a map.

But, given how variable spelling is, especially as you go back in time, I've got little confidence in -berg vs. -burg vs. -borg vs. -borgh. In the same generation a little closer in time, a descendent of his married in to the Brittain family. Which, in a single generation, shows spellings of Britain, Brittain, Briton, Britton, Britten, Brittin, Britin, and Briton.

Anyhow, one of the bits of history I learned was about the Low Countries' 80 years war with the (Spanish) Hapsburgs. He left for this side of the ocean shortly after the end of that war. His eventual wife left a couple years later, and she was more straightforwardly Dutch or Belgian. Possible that they knew each other in the old world. They certainly got married pretty soon after she arrived. More trivia: There are reportedly no people in the Netherlands called "van Oldenburg" anymore.Marconoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5337555368793819627.post-56194115380874627912014-11-30T11:46:54.150-05:002014-11-30T11:46:54.150-05:00Thank you for the reference. But this article is good.

Trivia: A distant (10th great grandfather!) ancestor of mine is recorded as Gerrit Jansen van Oldenburg.
